Ulihatu village is located in Khunti district in Jharkhand. It is the
birthplace of the “DhartiAaba” Bhagwan Birsa Munda. He initiated
the first freedom revolt against the britishers in 1835. It is located
37 km towards North from district head quarter and further 80 kms
from state capital Ranchi.
Ulihatu village is surrounded by Hills and scenic beauty around is
amazing. It also has sunset point near the village which is
unexplored by tourist. Bhagwan Birsa Munda, freedom fighter,
religious leader and tribal icon was born on 15 November 1875 at
Ulihatu. He is the only tribal leader whose portrait adorns the
central hall of the Indian parliament. Ulihatu was the birthplace of
Sugana Munda, father of Birsa. The claim of Ulihatu rests on
Birsa's elder brother Komta Munda living in the village, where his
house still exists.
Birsa's experience as a young boy, driven from place to place in
search of employment, gave him insight into the agrarian question
and forest matters; he was no passive spectator but an active
participant in the movement going on in the neighborhood.
Birsa is credited for reviving the traditional tribal culture He
himself became a preacher and a representative of their
traditional tribal religion, and soon, he built up a reputation as a
healer, a miracle-worker, and a preacher. Birsa Munda started to
advise tribal people to pursue their original traditional tribal
religious system. Impressed by his teachings, he was a saintly
figure to the tribal people, and they sought his blessings. The
Union cabinet, at a meeting held on 10 November 2021, voted to
observe 15 November, Birsa Munda's birth anniversary, as
Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, to remember the contribution of tribal
freedom fighters.
